About Réformées

Réformées in the New World was created to facilitate a better understanding of Huguenot culture and to act a supplement to a project that I am working on as a history major at the University of Baltimore. This project consists of using several primary and secondary sources to reveal the story of an ancestor. In my case, I chose Jean deJarnat: a French Protestant refugee who arrived in Virginia prior to 1705.

What does “Réformées” mean?

Réformées simply means “reformed” in French. I thought this was a clever way of alluding to changes that occurred in Huguenot culture when they emigrated, as well as a way of recognizing their link to the Protestant Reformation.
